St. Patrick’s Day, a Happy, Lucky Time For Third Annual Swing for the Kids

Was it his bright green shorts that gave Scott Nettles the edge?  Or was it his cowboy boots?  Whatever it was, the luck of the Irish was definitely on Nettles’ team’s side in the third annual  Swing for the Kids golf tournament on the Plantation Course at Edisto on St.Patrick’s Day, 2025.

Eighteen intrepid teams of the twenty which registered showed up to brave gale-force winds and have a good time regardless of the weather, all in the name of a great cause:  Edisto Island Youth Recreation (EIYR). Edisto Beach Mayor Crawford Moore joined by EIYR President Geno Middleton opened the shotgun start, and carts rolled off to spend the next three hours enjoying a special St. Paddy’s Day away from work and life in general.

Sponsored by the Edistonian, Nettles team members were: Wes Robertson, Eddie Robertson and Randy Hamilton.  First place prize was a round of golf at Stono Ferry.  Second place finish went to Rees Jones’ team of Brady Jones, Rick Broome, and Gary Allen. Their prize is a future date at the Plantation Course which hopefully will not include hurricane winds.

Carolina One team member Leslie Hurley took home prizes for Closest to the hole and Longest Drive.   And the third place finishers who won a round of golf at Shadowmoss were Bernard Keyes, Daniel Garland, Joe Fayall , and Kevin Verette.

The tournament would not be possible without the support of Heather Harrison and her Plantation Course staff Duane, Wayne, Jeff, Tommy and Jim or without the generosity of local businesses.  Green Boat Discount Liquors hosts the complimentary Bloody Mary Bar each year; Food Lion’s Carol Fludd made a ton of sandwiches to go with FL’s donated bottled water.  Gift certificates and other prizes were donated by The Shops at Edisto, Whaley’s Restaurant and Bar, Marsh Moon Coffee Shop and Marsh Hen Mill.

Proceeds from the Tournament help pay for athletic equipment, uniforms, fees , insurance and transportation for young people who live on Edisto and nearby rural communities.  Edisto Island Youth Recreation is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to give young people access to sports and recreation opportunities that help them become successful adults.   For more information, on how to donate or volunteer call Geno Middleton at 843-209-3001.
